A Hodgepodge of Blogs

A full Indian dinner at Anarkali; or, in my brother's words, "Holy Rhea!"

The amazing work of Mike at Studio City Tattoo.

Well, friends, I still have no complaints about living in the city. Despite the hustle and bustle of being in the heart of Los Angeles and falling asleep to the sound of my downstairs neighbor getting her ass slapped, I really do love it here. There's nothing that compares to living close to family and friends, and I constantly am befuddled by how quickly time flies when you're having fun. This week's mish mosh of spots is listed in the order of which they were visited:

Studio City Tattoo 11032 Ventura Blvd., Studio City
A friend recommended the artist, Mike, to me. I went with said friend to get her tattoo and was rather impressed with Mike's efficient and smooth work. Before I left the shop, I chatted with Mike and showed him some sketches of what I wanted. He asked me to email the sketches and to give him a few days to create a design around a previously existing tattoo. Four days, 30 minutes, and a glass of wine later, I was thrilled with the outcome. Mike's intricate work on my bony right foot was more than I could have asked for. Tattoos come with a hefty price tag (the shop's minimum is $80), which is well worth the investment for a piece of art that will last you forever. I think I'm done with my tattoo frenzy (are you happy, dad?), although I'd go back to see Mike if I ever got the urge to be inked.

BLD 7450 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles
Thank you, LA Restaurant Week! For a $26 prix fixe plus an $18 wine pairing, my friend, Mara, and I got to experience one of LA's most talked about eateries. We each got an appetizer (bacon-wrapped figs), entree (butternut squash lasagna), and dessert (bread pudding). Clearly, the foods in parentheses were my selections for the evening. I'm a firm believer that a meal is well worth the splurge if it pleasantly haunts your palate for weeks to come. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, before wishing a hearty Shabbat Shalom to all those nice Jews we saw on the walk to the Village Idiot.

Oak Fire Grill (formerly Stone Fire Grill) 829 N. La Cienega Blvd., West Hollywood
For some reason, this sports bar/pizzeria has turned into my new family dinner spot. The thin crust pizzas are delectable and delicious and the Happy Hour deals can't be beat. The other night I went to Oak Fire with my girl, Talia, newly-engaged and co-creator of the Three Day Rule. She asked me to accompany her to Oak Fire (the night the Yankees won the World Series oh heeeeeeeeeeeeeey!) to take some pictures of guys on the town. To our surprise, we were turned down by bar fly douchebags who wouldn't let us snap even one shot. They were rude, too! Um, are you kidding me?? I'd be flattered if some cute dudes approached me for their website which highlights eligible young singles on the town! Whatevs. Short and sweet: go to Oak Fire for the Happy Hour and the food, not for the dudes. Ew.

I do hope to see all you 21+ singles at the Three Day Rule's next mixer at Bar Lubitsch on Wednesday, November 18, from 8-10pm. I mean, who isn't excited to meet Mr. or Mrs. Right [Now]??

Rush Street 9546 Washington Blvd., Culver City
My good friend, Jess, recommended this place for dinner and a drink the other night. We met up Thursday night after work for a night of fantastic company, awesome food, and great service. The place didn't fill up until around 7:30, making it easy for us to snag a table without a reservation. The turkey burger was moist, the sweet potato fries were crisp, the mac 'n' cheese was garlicky and amazing, and the first round of drinks was free. This is a great spot for meeting friends or a date. There's a stripper pole (say whaaaa?!) on the second floor behind the bar and a patio open for dining, drinking, and smoking (ick). Park in the lot off Cardiff; it's free for the first two hours and $1 every hour after that.

Prix 8776 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood
I've raved about Roger before and I'll rave about him again. I'm now a return customer and I've gone to Roger for two of my nine piercings. He's been in the business for 11 years and has pricked the best of the best, including the Osbourne family, P. Diddy/Puff Daddy/Sean "Puffy" Combs, and LaToya Jackson. This salon is clean and thorough with a friendly and fun staff. No doubt you should call and ask for Roger for your next piercing. My N.T. and I have a love-love relationship with him. Gotta love the Rog.

Anarkali 7013 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles
Still my favorite Indian restaurant in L.A. Last night I went with my girl, E, and we indulged to the point of physical pain (I still believe there's a little Indian man Bollywood dancing inside my tummy). The food never disappoints and their Chicken Tikka Masala can't be beat. They started us off with free Samosas and topped us off with Rice Pudding, on the house. Be sure to print the $10, dine-in only coupon before you go, and they might even give you another one at the end of the meal, like they did for each of us last night. Park at a meter and save yourself the cost of valet.

The Hip Chick Goes Vegan

No, not completely, although I would if all vegan food was a delicious as the food at Vegan Glory. Located at the northeast corner of Beverly and Orlando, this lil' place sits right on the edge of a strip mall, which is only really noticed by the locals. I pass by this place all the time and have only heard great things about it from my trainer and one of my best friends, who is my N.T. the person who connected me to said trainer. Everything at Vegan Glory is great. For $10 you can get an entree and brown rice that will last you through that meal and most likely the next two. There's a minimum $15 delivery charge, so feel free to order generously and stock up. I'm a huge fan of the Yellow Curry with soy chicken, and I'm pretty sure my brother is also hooked, since he polished off my leftovers that same night. The crispy tacos with soy chicken are also delicious -- they taste like Taco Bell crispy tacos, minus the orange grease. Parking is decent in the lot. It's valet, although the valet guys are cool if you just go to pick up. Even if you're a die-hard meat eater, you'd be shocked at just how tasty the soy meat is at Vegan Glory. Go ahead...try it. I dare you.

Once again, I'm gonna blog about my trainer. No, not because I want to, but because she won't get off my ass until I do. Just kidding!! It is such a pleasure to blog about Tracie, a woman who continues to change me for the better both inside and out. I kept telling myself, "Okay, this is the last time I'm going to hire her," and then it comes to the end of the series and my gut (no pun intended) always tells me to bring her on again. I am getting so many positive reactions from friends and family and I'm gaining such confidence with the way I view myself. Even though I will never (and would never want to) be rail thin, fitting comfortably into a size 6 is something I never thought possible after gaining that "freshman 15" and studying abroad 20. Yes, kids, at my worst, I was pushin' a size 12 and was at least 15-20 lbs. heavier than I am now. And, as I say to my students, "I only tell true stories" (thanks, Susie!). This not to knock all the size 12's of the world, since we women come in all different shapes and sizes. Although, for my body, a size 12 just ain't cuttin' it.

Just when I think my workouts can't get any harder, Tracie catches me off guard and adds weights to the body bar I'm forced to hold during sit ups. She has given me the motivation to wake my ass up at 6:00 am (even the sun is still asleep!) and go running, and those late nights at Astro Burger are long behind me. Do you want to know the best part of training with Tracie? I've developed a friendship that far surpasses our triweekly hour-and-fifteen-minute sessions. She is one of the most real people I know, nailing my problems on the head and throwing reality in my face. If I get down on myself or have a bad day, she wakes me up and tells me what I can do to change my attitude. She reinforces positivity and helps me to fight off those demons that shade my path to self-realization and acceptance. Bottom line: she's an amazing trainer and an even more amazing person. And I couldn't ask for anything more. If you're interested in hooking up with Tracie Hendricks, please contact me directly. You can also find her teaching multiple classes at Equinox in Woodland Hills and West Hollywood.

"You Haven't Updated Your Blob Lately"

I know, dad...and it's a "blog," not a "blob."

I apologize to all for being so out of the blogging loop. Two weeks into work, I am happily wearing more hats than I started with. I'm the third grade co-teacher, the Spanish Enrichment teacher, the new fourth grade math teacher, and the assistant in the nursery school's Science Enrichment program. I'm busy working, working out, socializing, and just living my life and honing in on what's really important and what truly makes me happy. Here are some hot spots that put the happy in my happiness:

El Compadre 7408 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles 90046
An abundance of chips and salsa, flaming margaritas (literally served en fuego), and a delicious variety of Mexican food. The environment is lively and the restaurant is jammed, so be sure to make a reservation before you go. A great place to go with friends for a good meal and good times. Street parking only, so check out those street signs; them parking guys are vicious.

Vito's Pizza 846 N. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles 90069
Absolutely the best pizza in L.A. The pizza only comes in one size (large) with a thin crust and huge slices. The baked zitti is out of this world. 27 years of living in this city (well, 22 1/2, if you count college and studying abroad), and I finally find a pizza joint that's worth each and every calorie. The most surprising part? It's cheap! For a massivo pizza and large order of pasta, a mini salad, including delivery and tip, the bill will run you about $30. Mind you, this amount of food could feed a group of four...my brother and I ate it all ourselves. Stomach cramps, ahoy! Oh, and don't forget the Toppings.

Versailles Cuban Restaurants L.A. and the Valley
This place is an L.A. secret. With the motto "Cuban food at its best!" Versailles never disappoints. It's a favorite in my family, and we enjoy the chicken, pork, and fish. Try not to fill up on the garlic bread when you get there, 'cause you'll be upset you didn't have enough room for the main dishes. The ambiance is casual and laid back and reservations are accepted. This is one of those places you never think to go to right off the bat, even though it always hits the spot. Beware of the garlic -- it's potent! So try not to burp or breathe in a public venue. People will notice.

Joan's on Third 8350 1/2 West Third St., Los Angeles 90048
Hands down, the best mac n' cheese I've ever had. Ever. Go during the day to see and be seen; go at night to avoid the crowd.

Jersey Mike's Subs 7100 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood 90046
Well, kids, my uncle did it again. With his first franchise booming in Northridge, he has opened a second location in the Target shopping center (Santa Monica and La Brea) that's already generating a buzz. Lines out the door in both locations, Jersey Mike's is surpassing Subway and Quiznos on the sandwich homefront. My all-time favorite is still the #7, add salami, Mike's way, no tomatoes. Don't forget to add a cookie and/or a brownie to your sandwich, chips, and soda. Nip that post-lunch sweet craving in the bud!

Fryman Canyon Intersection of Fryman and Laurel Canyon, Studio City
A 3-mile hike that's great to do solo or with some friends. Last Friday I hiked it on my own, stopping at a bench mid-way to do 90 tricep dips (which way to the gun show?). I walked uphill and ran downhill, not once regretting that I braved the workout in the blazing heat. The views are beautiful and the trail is empty during the week. I look forward to crossing paths with you there soon.

Even though I mostly blog about food and working out, I'd like to add notable mentions to two L.A. standouts:

Prix Body Adornment 8776 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood
Don't tell anyone but, last Thursday, my piercing count jumped from seven to eight, thanks to my girl E and Roger, the best piercer I've even been to. I read reviews about Roger on Yelp and, coincidentally, he ended up being our piercer. Although the piercing prices are steep (the price includes jewelry), the service is well worth it. Roger clearly explained the entire piercing procedure, alleviating any questions, concerns or fears we may have had. This was also the least painful of any of my piercings, proving that good piercers know how to make the process comfortable (well, as comfortable as it can be) and worth it. I highly recommend Roger for any future piercings you may crave. He's fantastic.

Tina Nails 8371 West Third Street, Los Angeles 90048
My new favorite place to get my nails did. Efficient, clean, cheap, and friendly, each woman who works here does a great job. If you dig acrylics, Tina does the best in L.A.; they're thin, natural-looking, and beautiful. Tina always remembers customers by name and makes you feel welcome as she says, "Pick a cullah." One of my favorite parts about the pedicures is the hot towel they throw on your legs after the massage. Mmm. Walk-ins welcome and appointments accepted no more than a day in advance.

L'shana tovah!

"I Do Yoga and Pilates and the Room is Full of Hotties"

Well, well, well, the Hip Chick blogs again. Didn't think it would come so soon, huh?

In my last entry, I don't think I did my trainer, Tracie Hendricks, enough justice with one shout out....apparently, neither did she. Before her nod of disapproval of my sharing that I had brown rice with dinner, she pulled me aside and told me that she didn't like how food stole her Lean Mean Fighting Machine spotlight. I explained to her that the Hip Chick blogs about food; although, now that I have her in my life, she thought I should put more emphasis on physical activities - not just food - in LA...

...and, since I love her and she is transforming my body into steel, I agreed.

As I've mentioned time and time again, I workout a lot. For those of you that go to the gym, run, hike, do yoga, yadda yadda yadda, you know there comes a point in the workout where you just have to stop; it becomes too hard. Let me tell you a little something about Tracie. The first time I trained with her, I almost puked. After 150 side/leg lifts at the end of our hour-long workout, I had to run upstairs and stick my head in the toilet. No, I didn't hurl, although I came pretty damn close. Tracie pushes me to the point of no return. In addition to reminding me to relax my face, stick in my tongue, and contract my abs, she constantly tells me that training my body is so beneficial, and she works with my strengths and challenges me in ways I never thought possible. She is very realistic, keeping the mindset that she trains her clients so she can one day set them free, applying the knowledge she has given them after the trainer/client relationship comes to an end.

Even though some may look at me and think I'm crazy for hiring a personal trainer, this is something that I am doing for my own well-being, happiness and health. Tracie teaches me to honor, worship, and listen to my body, strengthening and maintaining its health for years and years to come. She lets me take breaks but never lets me quit.

And the relationship doesn't stop when our time together is up. Tracie is always texting me, asking how I feel after a workout. She also makes me feel a bit crappy over text, telling me that if I don't feel sore after a workout then I'm just cheating myself. Tough love? I think so. And it sure as shit works. If I'm out at a restaurant and can't decide what to eat, I can shoot her a text and ask for her advice. Despite her favoritism of healthy, protein-packed meals, Tracie doesn't believe in depriving oneself of deliciously unhealthy treats; she'll just push you that much harder the next time you meet. Another benefit to working with Tracie? You get to experience her classes at Equinox where, I believe, all the beautiful people go. This morning I saw Janice Dickinson, her barely legal boyfriend, and Jackie from "Work Out."

The best thing about Tracie? She always puts a smile on my face. Whether she's yelling, "Oh Challah!" (yes, that spelling is correct) to the passing cars or laughing at me for wearing pigtails and running like a five-year old girl, she reminds me that this personal training is something that will only help me in the long run. She has also blessed me with the mantra, "Hair down, boobs up," reinforcing the fact that looking good at the gym and putting a little mascara on the eyes never hurt anyone. Personal training and improved self confidence go hand-in-hand.

Next week we're upping the ante with hikes at Fryman and...eek...running. Will I survive the intensity and be able to blog again? Only time will tell.

Again, if you want to link up with Tracie, feel free to contact me directly.

I'm in LA, Trick!

The Banana Pudding at Toast: Well worth the $6.95 and bazillion calories

One of my favorite things about living in the city is the plethora of opportunities at my fingertips. It's pretty rare if I have to get in a car to experience great food, a good workout, or a new wardrobe (hey, I can't help it if Old Navy's workout clothes are on sale). I walk everywhere and discover new and exciting things every day. Here are some of my newest LA finds:

A.O.C. 8022 West 3rd Street, Los Angeles 90048
To quote a dear friend, "A.O.C. - A.O.Amazing!" This was my second time trying A.O.C. and it had been about three or four years since the first time I tried it. I indulged here with three of my closest friends, and we - so "Sex and the City" like - chatted over wine and small plates filled with cheese, salads, vegetables, fish, and, of course, dessert. The roasted dates with parmesan and bacon were out of this world, as were the beet salad and farro and black rice with pinenuts and currants. This is a great place to go with a small group of friends or on a date, and they even have a private terrace upstairs which would be great for parties. This place is pricey, but well worth every penny. And the wine list has something to satiate everyone's palate.

Boss Sushi 268 S. La Cienega Blvd., Beverly Hills 90211
Sushi is my favorite food, by far, and Boss did no less than impress. Try the Princess Camille, Beverly Hills 90211 and Rainbow Dragon rolls. The portions are huge. The seaweed salad and green tea are great too. Parking in back or try a meter in front (free after 6p). They accept reservations, but they're not always necessary. Yet another great sushi joint in LA. You got it, Boss!

Toast Bakery Cafe 8221 West 3rd Street, Los Angeles 90048
If you try eating here anytime before 2p.m. any day of the week, don't expect to immediately snag a table. This place is PACKED! Whether it's the food, the location, or the celeb spottings (isn't that Scarlett Johansson??), there's something special that puts Toast on the edible map. I've been here a few times and always seem to order the Garden Salad: mixed greens, sun-dried tomatoes, goat cheese, pinenuts, strips of grilled garden burger, and house vinagrette dressing. I recommend the half portion, since the regular size is massive. Now don't get me started on the dessert. They have this birthday cake thing, which is vanilla cake with buttercream frosting, and I would make it walk down the aisle with me if it could. I was also introduced to the banana pudding (see pic above) the other day by my love, Liza. This pudding is to die for!! Liza and I split it and chomping through the layers was like unwrapping each of the eight Chanukah presents: the very top is Oreo cookies; the second layer is banana pudding; the third layer is Oreo crumbs; the fourth later is banana chunks; and the fifth later is all that shit mixed together. OMFG! Amazing! I had a ginormous tummy ache later that night, although the pain was well worth it. Is that a banana in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

Toppings Yogurt 349 S. Robertson Blvd., Beverly Hills 90211
Ma Nishma? Toppings is both a fantastic yogurt spot and a Kosher eater's delight. So many Chosen People -- I love it!! It's always nice to connect with your peeps while satisfying your belly. This place is, apparently, along the lines of Menchie's, where you serve yourself and pay by the ounce. Great yogurt selections and even better toppings. You might find it beneficial to put the toppings on the bottom and the top. Try the coconut yogurt bottomed and topped (that's what he said) with rainbow sprinkles, heath bar, cheesecake bites and chocolate chip cookie dough balls. Yeah, that's right, I put all that on my yogurt. I also really enjoy the peanut butter yogurt, my cousin's fiancee likes the mint, and my cousin and brother like the chocolate. A lot of something for everyone at a totally reasonable price. How can you complain? You fill it up yourself!

Now, I know you're probably thinking, "My lord, woman, STOP EATING!!" Well, my friends, if you are dedicated readers and have been following me from the start, you will know that I eat hard and exercise hard. Although I don't deprive myself of delicious eats, most days are spent eating vegetables, fruit, tofu, and brown rice. I also workout five-to-six days a week and have added a personal trainer to the mix. A BIG shout out to my trainer, Tracie Hendricks, who kicks my ass into shape and never lets me quit. For more information on how you can link up with Tracie, feel free to contact me directly.

If you ever wonder how I crank out all this witty jargon, I do it by sitting with my laptop in my living room or at some type of a coffee shop, pop in my earbuds, and listen to Pandora or ITunes. Try this one on for size: Dance is Dead (Tocadisco Remix) by Boosta. Enjoy!

Movin' On Up!

Lunch at FOOD+LAB in West Hollywood

Well, my friends, it has been quite some time since I've blogged. Despite my brief hiatus, I am back, and ready to take on the blogging world. Allow me to fill you in on some of my recent happenings.

The main reason for my lack of blogging is the fact that I moved. Yes, kids, I'm out of the valley and back out on my own in the City of Angels. Words can't express the amount of gratitude I feel towards my aunt and uncle for taking me into their home for the past two significant years. They gave me such huge amounts of love and support through so many life changes, that I grow teary-eyed when I think of how much I'll miss their daily presence. In the past two years, I survived grad school (What did you say? A 3.9 GPA? Yeah, that's right.), received my teaching credential in Elementary Education, landed a job for the fall at a wonderful school in the valley, ended a relationship that was masking my inner happiness, got two tattoos, went to Israel, and encountered the deaths of four of my beloved family members, one of which was my maternal grandmother and my last living grandparent. Needless to say, these past two years have been life-changing, and I would not have been able to hold my head up through most of these events, had it not been for my aunt and uncle. But, as we all know, life goes on, and it's time for me to grab the reins of life by myself once again.

Okay, okay, I know what you're really here for, my take on LA life. So, slow your roll, and allow me to share...

FOOD+LAB 7253 Santa Monica Blvd., Trannyville, CA 90046
This place is totally hidden amongst the Russian markets and nudie bars in West Hollywood. It was introduced to me by one of my best friends, Steph, who read about it on Daily Candy, and we decided to try it one Saturday afternoon. We shared the prosciutto with ricotta, fig, and balsamic honey reduction sandwich, cucumber salad, potato salad with prosciutto (Kosher, much?), and a couscous-like salad with dried fruit. Everything was delicious. The one drawback I have is that the service was slow, but we were very happy once the food came. Few tables, parking in rear or meters on Santa Monica Blvd. Definitely a place to check out, and the food is reminiscent of Joan's on Third, another fave and my new local hotspot.

Joan's on Third 8350 West Third St., Los Angeles 90048
What can I say about Joan's on Third? It's simply delicious. From the apricot glazed ham and brie sandwich, to the baby field greens salad, to the everything cookie and the Snickers cupcake, you really can't go wrong. Apparently, the egg salad sandwich and macaroni and cheese are amazing. A bit of a steep price for a simple lunch, but the food and ambiance are well worth it. Don't expect to snag a table as soon as you get there; this place is always crowded. Great for peeping LA locals and celebs (What up, Dr. Hahn?). Parking might be tough (meters on 3rd), but if you dine with Yours Truly, it's a 2-minute walk from my apartment. Look forward to bumping into you there.

Bollywood Dance, 24 Hour Fitness 8612 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood 90046
Talk about having fun while working out. This class is AWESOME! One of my best friends, Alice, is in town from NY, so she and I decided to try this class last night. Rahul is a fantastic instructor, with a British accent to top it all off. He combines intricate footwork, hand movements, and head nods to give you a heart-racing cardiovascular workout. With or without athletic kicks, you'll be jumping and dancing your way to a newer you. Great music, great energy, and great moves. Wednesday nights at 8p.m.

Tonight, I'm seeing what these free concerts at the Santa Monica Pier have to offer. Apparently, they're great. Tomorrow night, A.O.C. Cheers!

"I'm Not Josie Grossie Anymore!"

The Buffalo burger with truffle fries at Josie

I ate at
Josie the other night for my uncle's birthday. Located on Pico and 25th, you would never know that a fine dining restaurant is located amidst the old buildings in Santa Monica. When you're inside the restaurant, you feel like you're in someone's living room; cool green walls and crown moulding, comfy couch-like booths with pillows, and few tables create an intimate feel. They offer a prix fixe menu, which includes an appetizer, entree and dessert, that is well worth the $45 if you like the chosen items. I was not a fan of what the prix fixe had to offer, so I opted for the buffalo burger with truffle fries. Oh...my...goodness. Delicious! My burger was lean, juicy, and HUGE (that's what she said), topped with gruyere cheese, caramelized onions and foie gras, and neither the burger nor fries needed ketchup. As an appetizer to the appetizers, we all got a complimentary slice of a gruyere cheese, mushroom and spinach quiche that was out of this world. Everything was delicious, from the goat cheese tart and bibb salad appetizers, to the buffalo burger and Brittany Salt-Crusted Jidori Chicken Breast, to the rich chocolate bread pudding and apricot tarte tatin for dessert. Don't expect to get out cheap. With appetizers, entrees, desserts, and wine, this place will set you back about $50 per person. Josie may not be a let's-go-grab-a-bite-to-eat type of a place, but I highly recommend it for a nice night out, if you can afford it.

Hip Chick WV

And this was just the rehearsal dinner

Hi, y'all! I'm back from the east coast, currently detoxing from a week filled with biscuits, beer, Moon Pies, Buttery Nipples, red velvet cake, Moonshine, cornbread muffins, and a whole lot of humidity and bug bites. I'm pretty sure I went into culture shock in Hurricane, WV, the minute we stopped off at Taco Bell for our first meal. Little did I know that Taco Bell is in the heart of Putnam County, WV, backed by an Arby's, KFC, and the largest Walmart I've ever seen in my life (did you know that they sell produce?!). As you drive down the street, everyone waves to you, no one honks, and the lush green acres house big, beautiful homes for less than half the price of a two-bedroom house in the San Fernando Valley. Let me tell you, though, as much as I am a city girl, being in the country for a week truly made me feel like I was on vacation. I was surrounded by wonderful people, soaked up the sun, ate like there was no tomorrow, and remembered the importance of taking a deep breath and appreciating the simple things in life. Allow me to share with you some of the trip's delectable highlights:

The Runion-Hayes House:
Talk about your southern hospitality! I stayed with the groom's parents for half of the time, then moved to the happy couple's abode for the latter half of my trip. Never once did I feel like I was on someone else's territory, for these people truly defined mi casa es su casa. A fridge filled with fresh meats, cheeses, and an abundance of leftovers, dinners and brunches decked out with breakfast pastries, mac 'n' cheese, mashed potatoes, baked beans, and massive hunks of steak, and a variety of cheesecakes that would reward a hefty chunk of change if sold at a bakery. If all people were as hospitable as southern folk, we wouldn't have to spend so much on alternate accommodations. Many thanks again to all members of the Runion, Hayes, and Runyon-Hayes families!

Wow. These biscuits are probably baked in butter. Salty, dense, filling, and totally worth the calories...well, only if you indulge once a week. I had mine after a late night out and, even though my friend spilled water on the table and on my biscuit, I still ate it. A must-try when on the east coast.

Hands down the best cornbread muffin I've ever had. Sweet, scrumptions, and tasty with or without butter. Kudos to Scott for introducing me to these bad boys, and I just learned that this restaurant is dispersed throughout southern California. Who'da thunk?

Apparently this restaurant is famous in the south. I went to brunch here with some new and old friends and was really hoping for a healthy breakfast option. Oh how excited was I to see oatmeal on the menu! When Flo walked over, she burst not only my healthy bubble but also my friend's vegetarian bubble by telling us that neither oatmeal nor veggie griddles were continued at the Cracker Barrel. WHAT?! I had to settle for a salad with iceberg lettuce...ugh. Whoop dee doo. Everyone else's meals looked like delicious heart attacks on plates, which I would have devoured instantaneously had I not been so gluttonous the previous four days.

We ate here with the newlyweds on our last night in WV. When you walk into the restaurant, you have your choice of hibachi on the right and regular dining on the left. This place truly gives you a taste of Asia: Thai, Chinese, Japanese, oh my! A little bit of something for everyone. I was pleasantly surprised with this restaurant, and my Panang curry was sweet, creamy, and loaded with chicken and veggies. Thumbs-up, Hurricane! I'll be seeing you during my next visit, fo' shizz.

What else can I say about West Virginia? If you can't stand the humidity, get out of the forest.

"Go Shorty, it's ya birthday."

Dear Hot's,
I'll take the mussels and ahi tuna appetizers, followed by one salmon teriyaki taco and one unagi taco. Yeah...that sounds about right.
*Images are much smaller than they appear in real life.

I apologize, for it's been a while since my last blog. When it rains, it pours, and I've been blessed with an influx of sub and assistant work through the end of this school year, followed by a summer job at CSUN's summer enrichment program. Needless to say, I've been busy, although it's all good things that have come my way. Despite my hectic schedule, the Hip Chick still lives, and I come bearing reviews of restaurants and classes of new and old:

As some of you know, I turned 27 on June 8. I am so fortunate to have so many loving friends and family who made my birthday so special, filled with laughter, love, good food, buttercream-topped cakes, and a buttload of birthday wishes. As a part of the birthday festivities, one of my best friends planned a dinner for my nearest and dearest at Kung Pao Kitty, located on Hollywood Blvd., just west of Cahuenga.

Kung Pao Kitty 6445 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028
Located in the heart of Hollywood, Kung Pao Kitty boasts an old world vibe with a modern twist, dark red lights and a full bar. You can find all of your favorite Chinese eats, topped off with a basket of fortune cookies to be passed around the table at the end of your meal. There were about 15 of us and we ordered family style. Really, everything we ordered was awesome. Since I didn't do the ordering, I can't list the massive amount of items we consumed, but I remember the cashew and sesame chicken being excellent, as well as the fried tofu, cream cheese wontons, and salt 'n' pepper prawns. We also ordered "adult" beverages and the total bill, evenly split, including tip (and the birthday girl's meal) came to $25 per person. Me likey. The one complaint we had was that the "adult" beverages were quite weak for their stiff Hollywood price tag.

*Word of advice: DO NOT PARK ON THE STREET!! Well worth it to pay $8 for valet over the risk of getting not one, but TWO parking tickets (sorry, Stepha).

Hot's Cantina In the shopping center at Devonshire and Reseda, Northridge
All this talk about Hot's and I still had yet to try it. Although I'm partial to the city, my weeks are spent deep in the San Fernando Valley. If any of you recall that episode of Entourage where it's the opening of "Aquaman" and the boys go to Northridge to watch it, you may recall, at the end of the episode, that Johnny Drama says the valley "isn't that bad" (despite the excessive heat and rolling blackouts). I do love the valley (c'mon, I was born and raised here!) and one of my favorite new things about the SFV is Hot's Cantina. This restaurant, with its blacked-out windows in the middle of a strip mall, is truly the definition of a hidden gem. Come expecting tasty appetizers, exotic tacos, a full bar, and a happy tummy when you're stuffed to the brim. Although the tacos aren't cheap, running $6-$12 a pop, they're HUGE and one or two should fill you up sufficiently. This spot is great for groups and a great place to watch sports -- they even have tv's in front of the restaurant if you decide to eat outside. A must try if you brave to drive over the hill.

Lola's Home of the BEST apple martini, 945 N. Fairfax Ave., WeHo
Lola's is a great spot for drinks, as well as an awesome date spot. Young professionals, deliciously fruity martinis (apple, pear, cantaloupe, yadda yadda yadda), and a very laid-back, loungey and classy feel. The food is GREAT, yet very pricey, so if you have the money go balls out, or else save the food for a special occasion. Oh, they do have "Wine and Dine" Sundays and Mondays, happy hour, and this AWESOME deal on Wednesday nights where for $23 you get a martini, an appetizer, and an entree (limited menu with good options). Count...me...IN!

Astroburger 7475 Santa Monica Blvd., WeHo
What more can I say about Astroburger? I think they need to put my picture up on the wall. The best late night dining spot. I bring friends, I run into friends, I make new friends. The grilled cheese is amazing (so simple...yet so delicious) and their chocolate shake is not to be missed. Cash only. Call me after you try it and tell me how much you love me for introducing you to it. Don't worry, I won't let it go to my head.

West Hollywood 24 Hour Fitness 8612 Santa Monica Blvd., WeHo
Now I've definitely ripped the Friday Turbo Kick instructor, Anthony B., a new a-hole in past blogs. He runs his mouth about rotator cuff surgery, the "correct" way to punch, and says the word "test" into his mic every five minutes in annoyingly OCD fashion. So you might expect that I wasn't too thrilled about my decision to try his class yet again on Friday night. I had no motivation to hop on a treadmill, so I figured I'd give his class another shot. Friends, let me tell you, Anthony B. redeemed himself! Hallelujah! My ass burned at least 800 calories in that cardio-packed hour. It was a regular kickboxing class that night, not Turbo Kick, and he gave us drills that would send many people straight to the Gay Pride-ridden streets. Squats that burn out your thighs, speed bags to make your shoulders go numb, and running sprints that make you question if your legs are still attached to your body. He still gave his rotator cuff and punching shpiel, topped with incessant "test test tests," but an instructor who says: "Follow her, she's really good," to the big buff man behind me and refers to me as sexy as the puddles of sweat drip down my speed-bagging arms, can't be all that bad.

Well, friends, I'm off to West Virginia. Imma gonna be a bridesmaid in one of my best friend's weddings; the first wedding I've ever been in! Will the Hip Chick return with West Virginian adventures? Do adventures even exist in West Virginia?? I sure hope so...

I Don't Date (818)

This past weekend was one of my rare weekends spent in the San Fernando Valley.  My weekends are usually dedicated to time with my brother and friends in the city, since it offers much more excitement than lil' old suburbia.   There's just something special about making that trip over the hill (a.k.a. Laurel Canyon): the Sunset Strip, the crowds, the city lights, honking at S.A.M.F.'s (ask my dad for the definition) who can't comprehend LA driving.  I love it, and soak it up as much as possible.

Last Saturday night, after the decision to remain in my valley home (Aunt Sherry and Uncle Lloyd's), my friend and I grabbed some dinner at Senor Fred, in between Sherman Oaks and Studio City, before heading out for another friend's party at the Copper Bucket.  I had heard bits and pieces about Senor Fred, "It's good but expensive," or "There's a lively bar crowd."   Regardless of having to pay for a pricey dinner on a substitute's salary, I believe it's well worth it to spend hard-earned cash on a damn good meal.  To my dismay, my chicken mole enchiladas were rather nasty.  The chicken was oh-so-dry, the tortillas were corn (ick) - not flour, and the pinto beans were bland.  I should have sent the plate back, although sometimes I am nice and keep to myself and figured I'd save the smack talk for the blog.  My meal (w/tip) was $19, and I would MUCH rather have paid $3 more for the five-course authentic Mexican deliciousness over at the Gardens of Taxco.  Shame on you, Senor Fred.  The bar was pretty crowded, although only fun if you root for Team Cougar.  No amount of alcohol could make me bat for the olds.  I'm about to turn 27, not 72.  I'd like to still maintain my dignity and non-gold-digging image, even if I'm the one paying for my drinks.

After dinner, we hopped on the 101N (well, west, technically), exited at White Oak, and hung a Louie onto beautiful Vanowen, landing us at ye ol' Copper Bucket.  Now I don't consider myself a bar snob...eh, well, not completely?  I tend to bitch if I'm outside of my city bubble on a weekend night and I find it inconvenient to drive 20 minutes to a bar ("Everywhere in LA takes twen-ty minutes!"  Anyone?) when I can hop in a cab or walk down the street to a local WeHo favorite.

I avoid Hollyweird at all costs, hate lines, and hate the D-bags that move to LA to look cool while standing in these lines.  So even though the bars I frequent aren't necessarily "dive" bars, they're populated with many laid back locals who also avoid the "scene."  I was intrigued to check out this Copper Bucket place, especially because the birthday girl, Marisa, is the only person I let manipulate my hair and by far one of the coolest chicks I know.  The Copper Bucket, in my opinion, is more rust than copper.  Definitely a local crowd, some of which look a bit shady (according to my friend, the elderly gentleman behind her was feeling himself up when she caught a glance of him).  I will hand it to this place, though -- no hassle getting in, personalized mini pitchers of beer, shuffle board, darts, pool, and head-bashing music blaring on the Juke Box.  This is definitely not my scene, although I know many people who would appreciate the Bucket's aura.  There's just something that sets me off from a bar whose lights are brighter than those in my bedroom.  Drinking or not, I don't want to see those bright lights until last call sends me to Astro or Mel's.

Speaking of Mel's, did I tell you who I saw there?  Mr. Ron Jeremy and his friend Dennis from the Bunny Ranch.  G-d help me if I knew who this Dennis man was, and I recognized RJ from other LA sightings (sorry, friends, I haven't seen his work) and my one-and-only Plus One who pointed him out.  Even though these men are rather scuzzy and RJ looks a lot like the Penguin from Batman Returns, they did give us a good laugh.  People kept going up to their table trying to talk to them and Dennis flashed us (yes, us) his girlfriend's tushie on the walk out.

...gotta love this city...

Hip Chick NY: Part Two

I have to admit that my favorite part of New York City is the Upper West Side.  Yes, Chinatown rocks with its street vendors and authentic cuisine, and the Village is a hot spot for hipsters and bustling nightlife, although there's something to be said about the vibe on the Upper West Side; the restaurants are great, young families roam the sidewalks, and cute little parks are interspersed amongst the busy streets.  One delicious restaurant on the UWS, nestled on the corner of 77th and Columbus, is the Shake Shack, serving up good ol' American food with quality taste.  I can't recommend a time of day to go, since this place is always packed.  It's one of those places where you order, pick up your food, and then need to search for a table.  There's plenty of space to sit upstairs and a little section to sit downstairs.  I am not a huge hamburger person, so I opted for the 'Shroom Burger.  It was good, although I would have been much happier if the cheese was optional, rather than baked inside, due to the effects that follow said consumption; otherwise, I would have been like a pig in shit.  The 'Shroom Burger is a fried portabello mushroom stuffed
with muenster and cheddar cheese, which I ended up oozing out onto my tray to save myself a night of stomach pain and heartburn.  I wish they had a veggie burger option, but what can ya' do?  My brother and cousins got burgers and really enjoyed them, and I was rather impressed when my cousin Daniel scarfed down his double-pattied burger without instant regurgitation.  I never understood the concept of the double patties, but to each his own, right?  The cheese fries are much better than the regular fries and the milkshakes are thick, rich, and delicious.  Definitely stop by here for a quick, filling bite.  The line proves this place is not a let down.

It's no surprise that when most people visit New York, they plant themselves in Manhattan.  Why would you want to be anywhere else?  Everything is at your fingertips.  When my family decided to buy a condo, we chose to branch outside of the city, infamous for its sky high rents.  So we hopped on the N Train to the north most tip of Queens in a place called Astoria.  Let me tell you, Astoria is the hidden
gem of Queens.  "Why leave Astoria?" is what I say.  Diverse ethnicities inhabit the streets, incredible food, and opportunities to shop 'til you drop without the need to throw 'bows amongst the crowds of people you'd find in the city.  Since Astoria is so new to us, my brother and I spent a lot of time exploring the town and seeing what it has to offer.  My brother and I are quite technologically savvy, so he used his Crackberry and I used my IPhone to see what Yelp and Urban Spoon had to say about many of the places we passed.

Iji Sushi was one of Astoria's few highly reviewed sushi joints, located on Broadway just north (or maybe east?) of Crescent.  My brother and I are sushi snobs, so of course we had to try it...and how happy are we that we did.  Iji has this unbelievable lunch deal, where you get three rolls, miso soup or salad, and unlimited green tea for $10.50.  $10.50?!  That's less than half the price I spend on my portion of sushi alone in West Hollywood!  The food was great, as was the service.  We will definitely be back next time we visit our east coast abode.

Obviously, we had to get dessert after our sushi meal (and every meal, for that matter), so we walked up the street to Omonia Cafe, one of the many amazing Greek cafes Astoria has to offer.  Mind you, you can find bakeries and cafes every few feet in both Astoria and Manhattan, but this cafe boasts desserts I have only seen in Greece.  My brother's marble cheesecake was to die for (minus the crust, which tasted like a damp chocolate sponge) and my little chocolate-sprinkled chocolate nut truffle was incredible.  Dude, Omonia created the cake for "My Big Fat Greek Wedding!"  That's the real deal.  One of my favorite things about my trip to Greece was this one bakery we would visit at least once a day, and it's nice to know I don't have to fly across the world to find those sweet treats.

I am already missing the "City that Never Sleeps" and the view of it from our beautiful home.  Don't worry, though, I'll be back soon.

**This week's blog is dedicated to my beloved cousins, the Robinsons, who always bring us good times and lots of laughter during our bi-yearly visits.  And a special shout out to Billy, who holds his jacket inappropriately and crop dusts amongst the crowded streets.

Hip Chick NY: Part One

New York is my home away from home.  I am so fortunate to have so many loved ones here, both family and friends, that each time I come to visit, I never want to leave.  New York is such an incredible state -- a melting pot of ethnicities, filled with delicious food, amazing shops, foot traffic, and the ever-so-popular NY public transit system.  This place, among other things, is known for its thick-skinned population, pizza, and heavy "Coffee Talk" accents and, as Madonna so musically states, "If you can't stand the heat, get off my street."

The newest place I've tried so far on this trip is Five Napkin Burger, located on the corner of 45th Street and 9th Ave., and a hop, skip and a jump from Times Square.  Great selection of drinks and everything we had was delicious.  We started with the hot spinach and artichoke dip, followed by burgers, fries, and messy, messy hands.  Pictured above is the Original 5 Napkin Burger (onions excluded) topped with gruyere cheese...yum.  I can't take credit for this burger, as it belongs to my friend, Maya, and when my friend, Jonathan, convinced me that their veggie burger is the best in town, I happily obliged.  The veggie burger was big, sloppy and delicious and perfectly paired with some delicious and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside french fries.  Don't expect to pay with change at this burger joint, yet don't expect it to break the bank.  Between cocktails, appetizers, and entrees, the bill ran $38 per person.  Not too shabby for a quality NYC eatery.  This is a great spot for small groups or dates.  Chill ambience, delicious food, and great location.

I know I've mentioned previously that desserts are one of my weaknesses, although, I'm not sure if I told you that I eat like a five-year old.  I love rainbow sprinkles, colorful chocolate candy, loads of frosting, and all that nonsense.  If you look at the first picture, that glorious cupcakelicious piece of heaven had my name written all over it.  Rainbow cake, rainbow sprinkles, and buttercream frosting on top and in the middle, created by the little angels at Crumbs Bake Shop (real people don't bake this well, do they??) in Union Square.  I just couldn't resist the temptation amidst a beautiful day in New York City, even though Crumbs is a short drive from where I live in LA LA Land.  And, hey, I'm on a vacation, which includes daily workouts every morning.  This was quite possibly the best cupcake I've ever eaten.  My brother got the Peanut Butter Cup, although it wasn't nearly as delicious as his favorite, the Artie Lange (they were all out).  One of my best friends, Jenn, whose palate I trust wholeheartedly, also recommended the Baba Booey, calling it simply "amazing."  Each cupcake is a hefty $3.75, although well worth it due to the size and taste.

I'm about halfway through my trip (already?!) and looking forward to new adventures in the "City that Never Sleeps".  Stay tuned...

When Good Classes Go Bad

The Thursday night Zumba class at the Porter Ranch YMCA is one of my favorites. The teacher, Corrine, pumps up the music and the energy to the point where I probably burn more calories than I do in some of my kickboxing classes. The music is great, the moves easy to follow, and new songs are infused weekly to change things up. Once I find a good instructor, I tend to stick with her, dreading the day she has a sub fill in. I truly believe that the teacher makes the class.

Ironically, I am a substitute teacher (anyone hiring for the fall?). I am fortunate to work at schools that frequently request my assistance, knowing that I will make the day fun yet still educational. I'm not saying this to toot my own horn; just going off of the buzz on the elementary school street. Such was not the case with my Zumba sub...

The sub was a woman named Rhea, who apparently teaches Pilates at the Y. I could tell by her soft spoken tone that this class would not be nearly as exciting as Corrine's. Boy, was I right. First of all, the music was way too low. If any of you have ever taken a workout class, working out in a quiet room is analogous to deflating the air out of a balloon; the life is nonexistent. Second, she told us that she prefers to exercise at low impact. Low impact? Sorry, lady, I don't pay $47 per month for low impact, nor do I own an AARP card. When I finish a workout, I want to be sweaty and grimy and feel like my ass just survived a severe kicking; or else, what's the point? She also could not keep the beat of the music, which is a downright shame when you are asked to teach a dance class. That's just added frustration during the hour when I should break free of life's stresses. If you're a workout instructor who can't sense the beat of the music, maybe you should question your career choice. Ouch.

About 25 minutes into the 60 minute class class, some of the girls who actually work at the Y and take this class decided to peace out. Five minutes after they bounced, so did I. I never leave classes, feeling empathetic for subs and trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. This time, though, Rhea gave me the runs and I opted for a treadmill instead. When I expressed my discontent to Corrine, she mentioned that Rhea usually teaches the "mature" crowd at Total Woman by the mall. Please, I could have told you that, as soon as I saw her step-touching instead of kicking it up to a jump. And she's not that old herself! Lazy? Maybe. Slow? Probably. Meek? Definitely. Girl just needs to move it out of the gym and into the retirement home.

Stay tuned for Hip Chick NY, as I move it to the east side for a mini vacay...

Flavor of Indian Love

For the past few weeks, I have seriously been craving Indian food.  Indian is one of my favorite cuisines and I could probably eat it everyday if the bill didn't break my piggy bank and the sauces didn't set my stomach in a tailspin.  So on Saturday night, when I knew the only person I'd be spending some QT with was my big brother, I suggested some tikka madness and my brother found a buy-one-get-one-free coupon for a place in the 'hood.  Love it.  We usually eat at Anarkali off of Melrose and La Brea because it is amazing and I want to bathe in their masala sauce.  This time, due to the coupon, we tried Flavor of India, just west of the Palm off of Santa Monica Blvd.  It's always strange trying a new place, especially when your palate craves specific flavors; the risk, though, was all worth it.  We ordered idli, chicken tandoori, chicken tikka masala (Dolly Parton's favorite), saag paneer, garlic naan, and rice.  Everything was delicious and the total, with the coupon and tip, came to $25 per person.  Valet parking is $5 or else you can test your luck looking for a metered spot along Santa Monica Blvd.

After dinner, we drove down the street to Angelina's for some frozen yogurt (Reminder: Please keep in mind that my brother was my date.  If this were a typical date, neither masala nor fro yo would have been involved).  Angelina's is a great frozen yogurt place, just west of Westbourne Dr. on Santa Monica Blvd.  They have their own parking lot and are open fairly late.  Nice service, great selection of flavors, and, most importantly, they put their toppings on top AND at the bottom of the cup.  Yesss!  The peanut butter is delicious and they have low carb crap for you super healthy overachievers.  This place never lets me down.

Notable mention this week to Oishi sushi.  I went there on a date last night (if any of you are keeping track, this is not the same date as the Lucky Devil night; he's long gone) and it was rather tasty.  Beware, though, there's a roll with crab, salmon, and gobo and that's wrapped in soy paper (something "burrito?").  As a part of its presentation, the roll is also wrapped in regular white paper.  THIS PAPER IS NOT EDIBLE.  Yeah, my new date learned the hard way.  Oh well, I guess it makes for a good first date story.

The Hip Chick Visits the OC

I am definitely an LA girl.  Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, I only hit up the beach when I know I will be there for a short period of time and won't have to deal with the heat, sand, and disturbingly dirty public bathrooms.  Don't get me wrong though, I do have my moments; nothing beats a drink on the pier, relaxing with friends, dipping your feet in the ocean (the seaweed scares me...and my cousin Matt), or going for a run along the sand that's been hardened by the tide.

Now this blog only gives you a glimpse into my world.  We all have a past, and the OC makes up a large part of my past.  Despite the fact that LA is my home and I have spent the majority of my 26 years of life here, for four years I lived in Newport Beach, CA, trying to fit in with the beach bunnies and surfer dudes.  I believe that everything you go through makes you stronger, and I was displaced to this beachy atmosphere mid-freshman year of high school due to a loss that no child should endure.  Although I see these years in Newport as my "dark years," I am fortunate enough to carry with me fantastic friends who were my rays of sunshine during that time period.  So as much as I used to cringe at the thought of having to return to a place that brought about such feelings of sadness, now, years later, I see it for what it is: a beautiful place to visit that is the home to my wonderful dad and his wonderful girlfriend, and the amazing friends who held my hands during such difficult times.  Now wipe those tears away and let's continue.

When I go to the OC, I stay at the Casa de papa Hip Chick y su novia.  Really, if you stay here, it's like the royal treatment: fresh flowers, homemade sweets, apple pancakes, steam showers (say what?!) and a whole lot of love.  While my dad is busy at work during the day, his girlfriend and I like taking advantage of the beautiful sights (and shops) that the OC has to offer.  When I was visiting last weekend, we headed down to Crystal Cove for some exercise.  Now my only memories of Crystal Cove consist of my high school boyfriend and I breaking into the beach after hours with his lifeguard key...the rest I'll leave up to your naughty imaginations.  Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that I was only 17, pre-college corruption and a man named Mr. Jack Daniels.  Regardless, it was nice to see Crystal Cove in another light...the light of the sun.  While my dad's gf and I were walking along the beach, I decided to take off for a run.  Really, running has never been so peaceful or motivational.  I flipped my IPod to my most recently downloaded David Guetta songs and took off.  There is something to be said about running along the water; you get this feeling of freedom and happiness and it's incredibly rejuvenating.  I highly recommend it.

After our walk/run, we brunched at the Beachcomber Cafe, which sits right along the water.  The service was great and the food was delicious.  Gayle had egg frittata and I had the oatmeal.  The wait will be long, especially if you're there when the weather is nice.  Despite the wait, the food and ambiance are worth it, and the little table buzzer thingamajig travels pretty far, so you can dip your tootsies in the water if you take a pre-grub walk along the beach.

I know I'm talkin' a whole lot about the OC, but I need to throw in a little tidbit about MILK on Beverly (just west of LA Brea).  One of my best friends and I went there last night for dessert after a delicious dinner from Buddha's Belly.  She suggested the blue velvet cake and...OMG...it was unbelievable.  Obvi, it's blue, but there are blueberries lodged into the frosting layers with a chocolate covered blueberry on top.  This cake is like a blueberry muffin on crack.  It's amazing!  And the frosting is this buttercream deliciousness.  If you don't like blueberries then, well, sucks for you.  And if you do like blueberries?  You'll love me (and Stephanie) forever.  I ate to the point where I was physically ill from forcing my stomach to expand to fit in all that yummy goodness.  Oh, and we also shared a blondie, but the nuts made it less appetizing.  If you like nuts in your sweets (walnuts, chestnuts...), then go balls out.  Enjoy!

It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Today in Southern California it's 70 degrees and sunny.  Hellooooo, Spring!  On days like these, I love taking advantage of being outdoors and soaking in the delicious climate that makes SoCal such a hot spot.  Sure, you could go to the beach, although it's still not warm enough and it's not quite time to start that sand collection in places where the sun doesn't shine.  So what's a great way to play outside, explore SoCal's flora and fauna (dogs, in layman's terms), and get your sweat on?  Take a hike!  Both in the valley and over the hill, one can take in some amazing views of Los Angeles, get a tan, and feel the burn on some of our amazing trails, the two most popular being Runyon Canyon and Fryman Canyon.

Runyon Canyon
I've been to Runyon Canyon numerous times.  I actually went here on a date a few years ago thinking that, miraculously, G-d might shine down upon me and close up my sweat glands for a couple of hours, making me look carefree and sexy on this daytime excursion (note to self: not gonna happen).  I roll up in workout gear while home skillet rocks some everyday wear.  Whaddya know, I'm sweating balls at the end of the trail while my date looks like he never stepped foot on the path.  Awesome.  From that point on, I learned to only workout with people who are aware of my pulling the small stick in the sweat gene pool (if you know my cousin Eric, he got screwed too...lucky us).

Nestled in the Hollywood Hills (Fuller and Franklin), Runyon is the place to see and be seen.  When you first enter this path, free yoga classes take place on the lawn to the left.  You'll see a bit of a fork in the road straight ahead: the right side leads you up numerous stairs to the viewpoint, where the left leads you up the main path and branches off to more difficult trails.  I often take the path most traveled, which is a nice balance of uphill and flat territory, followed by a steep incline to the finish.  I start at the foot of Fuller, although I believe there is a parking lot at the top of the main path (close to Mulholland) where many people park.  I'm just more fond of starting from the bottom (street parking only), working my way to the top, then turning around and saving the downhill for last.  If you so choose, you can try one of the alternate paths.  One of these paths, which I call the "Death Trail," is more than intense.  Don't brave this if you're not in good shape.  It's narrow, steep, and dusty, although well worth it if you can handle the challenge.  The first time I tried this Death Trail - which can be found a few steps into the main trail - I was about to rip my friend's head off (love you, Mara); although when I tried it about two years later, after many months of intense workouts, I ended up enjoying a hike I never thought I'd brave again.  I also wore my Keen Israeli hiking shoes the second time around, reducing my fear of slipping and falling on my ass.  Runyon has unbelievable views of Los Angeles and you trek alongside the Hollywood sign.  It's a great hike to try if you're new to town or simply want to test your legs on some pretty cool territory.  Wear sunscreen because there's little shade and your white ass will get burnt.  Oh, and bring your bitches.  All I ask is that you pick up their dookie because it stinks out there!

Pros: Amazing views; multiple paths; great rest stop w/views mid-hike; celebrity sightings
Cons: Crowded; difficult to park; smells like dog crap (ew)

Fryman Canyon
I have numerous friends who hike Fryman Canyon, although I had yet to try it myself.  Today was my day.  After an intense workout class, I dragged my ass to meet one of my good friends for a mid-day hike at Fryman.  Fryman is just off of Laurel Canyon at Fryman (go figure), with options to park either in the lot ($3) or on the street (free).  This path is waaay less crowded than Runyon and there is actually shade.  It's much more challenging at first, where Runyon whoops your ass at the end.  Be prepared for many steep twists and turns, followed by a plateau and then the downhill portion.  My girl and I decided to run from the plateau on, upping the cardio and proving how bad ass we truly are (we teachers know how to motivate!).  When you exit the path and hit the streets, you happen upon some gorgeous houses, one of which is occupied by the smokin' hot George Clooney.

"Dear Economy,

Can you please pick yourself the hell up off the ground so I can get a steady job and move next to Fryman Canyon?  Oh, and while you're at it, please send me a nice, mature, smart, attractive man who can share the bills [and bed] with me, because there's only so much an elementary school teacher can afford.

Hugs,
Pauli"

These homes are so beautiful, surrounded by lush greenery, with driveways that go on for days.  There wasn't anything to turn me off about Fryman.  Definitely a great first experience.

Pros: Not crowded; shade; challenging main path; great views; beautiful houses; ample parking
Cons: A bit tricky to find your way back to Laurel on the latter half of the trail (if Rosanne wasn't with me, I would have Google Mapped myself on my IPhone...no joke)

These are both great hikes to explore, especially if you're looking for something new to do in LA and a fun way to change up your cardio routine.  Both are in great locations, convenient to the city and the valley, surrounded by tons of scrumptious eateries to replace those calories you just burned.  As the weather gets warmer and bathing suit season rears its ugly head, I will definitely be taking advantage of these two LA faves.  Oh, and I always love company, so if you are planning to take a long walk off a short cliff...I mean a hike, hit a sista up!

When Life Hands You Lemons...

Whoopie Pie and Pizza Pie, courtesy of Susie Cakes and Stone Fire Pizza

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade? Bullshit, friends. My juicer is broken. Life has handed me a bunch of lemons and, as much as I want to, I just can't make a pitcher of juicy, sweet lemonade. I truly believe that things happen for a reason and the speed bumps you hit along the way will only make you appreciate the good things that are just around the bend. Despite my optimistic outlook for the long haul, I get very wrapped up in the here and now. So when life gets me down, I surround myself with good people and hand my sour lemons to a bartender who squeezes them into a stiff round of Lemon Drops.

So Friday night, my boys and I end up going to Crown Bar, this shi shi place that only lets you in if you are a douche bag, on a list, or a douche bag on a list. I don't understand the hype of this place and they violated me (not in a good way) at $12/drink. Harsh. Due to the fact that I met some nice new people, danced to good music (a plus for Crown), and kept the company of three of my faves, I'd chalk the experience up to a 7.5 out of 10. Crown is just west of La Brea on Santa Monica Blvd., walking distance from Jones, Formosa, Lubitsch, and Astro Burger. Valet parking only, which runs about $6-7. Makes much more sense to pre-party and then take a cab. Save yo' dolla dolla bills, y'all. Oh, obvi, we went to Astro after.

Miraculously, the next morning, I rolled my ass out of bed and made it to the 11 a.m. yoga class at the WeHo 24 Hour Fitness. Even though this whole yoga thing is somewhat new to us, my brother and I still gave it a try. The Saturday instructor is Fusako, and she bends in ways I never thought possible. At one point, she balanced her whole body on her arms, and instead of trying to maneuver myself, I found more pleasure in watching the people in front of me fall right on down. Although you get better at yoga the more you go, this lady was so quiet and hard to understand that I had trouble even attempting the positions...or maybe that's due to the fact that I got the spins every time I looked down and couldn't see Fusako past the brim of my baseball cap. The last time we did yoga was at the Sherman Oaks 24 Hour Fitness with two of our good friends, and their instructor, Trevor, was much better. His class flowed and was actually coherent. I would really like to get into yoga for spiritual and calming purposes, although when I workout, I put my mind to it, go for it, get down and break a sweat (where my Saved by the Bell fans at, yo?!). Would definitely try yoga again with a different instructor and without a hangover.

On Saturday, I was graced with the presence of one of my best friends, Keeley. Along with my family, we ate at Stone Fire Pizza for dinner. This place is great! The vibe is a classy sports bar. Good looking crowd and I coincidentally ran into Nick Swardson and some of his friends. If you go for Happy Hour, you get discounts on drinks and pizza. And Stone Fire definitely gets plus points for having Chateau St. Michelle, one of my favorite brands of Riesling. Salads are a decent size. My brother and I started with the candied walnut and fig salad and then went on to share the [clearly Kosher] bacon and pineapple and prosciutto and goat cheese pizzas. The pizzas have a thin, crispy crust (much thinner than NY pizza) and the slices are big at four slices a pie. They also have a vegan pizza for those who don't eat meat or cheese. Pizzas run an average of $15 a pop and salads are around $13. This place is perfect for group dinners and Happy Hour. Parking is street or valet and Stone Fire is walking distance to LA hot spots like The Spanish Kitchen, Koi, The Belmont, and STK.

As mentioned previously, I love my sweets. After I discovered the Farm-e-o, I didn't think anything could compare to its deliciousness. Boy, was I wrong! My dad's girlfriend introduced us to the Susie Cakes version of this sweet treat, a.k.a. Whoopie Pies, just as we arrived at the restaurant. I might have eaten a hefty chunk of the W.P. before my salad, oops. I was gonna eat it at some point! They're veeeery similar to the Farm-e-o, but the actual cookies are softer in the middle and the butter cream filling is a tad sweeter. It's truly a toss-up as to which my palate prefers, although I'll eat both without a doubt. The Whoopie Pies are $5 each, where the Farm-e-o's are around $4 (big difference, I know).

Despite the convenient location of Stone Fire Pizza, we decided to venture to the Village Idiot and Bar Lubitsch, with a side of Los Tacos for our night out. The Village Idiot is a chill spot. It gets pretty packed on the weekends and fills with young professionals. It's a restaurant/bar and the eating area takes up quite a bit of space, leaving little room for standing comfortably.  If you want to sit, you either need to find a seat at the bar, eat at a table, or move to the back where there's much more room to spread out.  There's also a room in back for private parties.  Parking is street or Valet.  We decided to change locales around 11:30, simply because we wanted a change of scenery.  All-in-all, the Village Idiot gets a thumbs up.

We topped off this fabulous weekend with a trip to Lulu's Cafe, one of my favorite brunch spots.  They have a lot of healthy options and soy milk, soy milk, soy milk!  I love a restaurant with non-dairy alternatives that please my tummy.  I had the baked granola with fresh fruit and soy milk and Keeley and Seth had variations of the two-egg breakfast.  Between the three of us - coffee, tea, and tip included - it came to $15/per person.  I love the ambiance here - open and airy and packed with people enjoying their weekend.  The only drawback is the parking, although I've never had an issue finding a spot on the street; don't even bother parking in the back.  Despite the crowd of people in front, you'll wait no longer than 10 minutes.

Needless to say, the weekend was a write-off for calories, and I'm not crying myself a river. I'll make it up on Monday.

You Lucky Devil, You!

I'm not a huge fan of the hamburger.  If asked, I'd choose a veggie patty over cow meat any day.  I'm definitely not a vegetarian, although I only opt for the beef when I'm at a barbecue.  Is that weird?  I think it's a little strange.  So when my date (he wanted to be in the picture) suggested Lucky Devils in Hollywood, hyping it up along with LA's gourmet burger craze, I gave in.  He did such a good job at selling the beef that I passed on the veggie patty and scarfed down the Lucky Burger, sans cheese.  We also had Caesar salad, mac n' cheese, sweet potato fries and regular fries.  Hey, don't judge, we didn't eat until 10:30...we were hungry!  I was pleasantly surprised with everything we ordered, although the mac n' cheese wasn't nearly as delicious as my aunt Sherry's.  Decent selection of wine and a vast selection of beer (tons on tap).  A great place to try if you are out and about in Hollywood.

Saturday night, I ventured to the Hollywood Improv, a seemingly unlikely place to just grab an after dinner drink.  I've only been there for shows, so little did I know I would spend the night schmoozing amongst some of the freshest faces in comedy, like Nick Swardson and Owen Benjamin.  Lucky for me and my obsession with famous people, my date (re: picture above) and his brother are good friends with Nick Swardson.  This guy is hilarious!  He's most commonly known for his roles in "Grandma's Boy" and, my personal fave, "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry."  We hung out with him the whole night and he even picked up our tab.  So nice!  The bar gets pretty crowded, filling with comedians and their cliques, and you don't need to pay the cover charge if you say you are just going for drinks.  If you're sly, you can slip into a show while the bouncer's not looking.  Don't blame the Hip Chick if you get caught.

So I'm starting this new diet, if you even want to call it a diet.  I'm basically limiting the crap in my food bank and increasing my intake of veggies and fruit.  As noted in previous posts, I balance my eating with intense, five-day-a-week workouts and, although I'm fierce, I'm still not at my goal weight.  I think that's a flaw one inherits as a woman, or perhaps I'm just too damn hard on myself.  Fortunately, my cousin's fiancee is a nutritionist and she's whipping me into shape on the food front.

Before my exciting trip to Ralphs to revamp my fridge, I hit up the YMCA for my oh-so-favorite Turbo Kick class.  Today, Corrine busted out Round 35, a round completely foreign to my Turbo Kick repertoire.  I have to say, though, this is quite possibly my favorite round to date.  Good music, fun moves, an ass kicking turbo section, and "wicked" final section that will pump anyone up.  If you click on the link for "turbo section," the instructor, Nolan, is the one I loved at the Irvine 24 Hour.  When you click on the "final section" link, be sure to check out the lady in pink.  Most people start off looking uncoordinated like that, although once you understand how Turbo Kick works, you'll begin to look and feel like a pro.  Sadly, though,  some people look like fools no matter how many times they go.  If you lack any shred of coordination, I'm sorry to say, my friends, that Turbo Kick isn't for you.  I mean, you can try it, although don't be surprised if someone (ahem, me) side-kicks you as you move in the opposite direction.

Day One of Operation Detox is coming to a close and I'm still under by 353 calories.  Not bad, eh?  Let's hope I can keep it up!
